what's happening around August 1

Picked up a red loveseat, a bookcase, a desk and display cabinet today, all used. I'm heading down to Portland to pick up some new pieces from a wholesaler there. Hope you've been staying cool...there's no air conditioner at the store but with all the fans running, it has been 20 degrees cooler than outside. Here's a few more tips and quotes:

When choosing a vacuum, don’t look at amps (which is how much power it draws from the wall) but instead look at the airflow in cubic feet per minute (CFM).

“Spaghetti can be eaten most successfully if you inhale it like a vacuum cleaner.”
-Sophia Loren

Don't leave linens folded up in a closet or packed away for extended periods of time because the fabric will deteriorate along the creases.

“Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”
-Samuel Ullman

Use steel wool on stainless steel, nylon pads on ceramic or acrylic sinks.

“No person who can read is ever successful at cleaning out an attic.”
-Ann Landers

Never mix ammonia based cleaners with chlorine based cleaners. The ammonia releases the chlorine as a toxic (and dangerous) gas.

“Few tasks are more like the torture of Sisyphus than housework, with its endless repetition: the clean becomes soiled, the soiled is made clean, over and over, day after day”
-Simone de Beauvoir
